Eddie Ricardo – Bio

Eduardo “Eddie” Ricardo is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu Professor, husband of jiu-jitsu World Champion Monique Ricardo and father of future jiu-jitsu champion Maxwell Ricardo.  Involved with martial arts since the age of 6, Eddie has dedicated his life to Martial Arts.  He has trained  in many different styles of martial arts, including karate, boxing, wrestling, capoeira and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Eddie started training karate at age 6 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which gave him a lot of coordination, balance, and focus. At the ripe age of 9 years old, he started capoeira.  This discipline provided Eddie with a lot of speed, mobility, acrobatic moves and was a lot of fun for him.

Eddie discovered MMA by watching early UFC tournaments and was impressed at how smaller fighters were able to dominate much larger opponents.  Once he moved to the United States, around the age of 15, young Eddie found his true calling in the complex martial art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Eddie went to the most highly regarded gym in the area and was really impressed with the level of training and instruction provided by well-known and even more well-respected BJJ Black Belt Carlos Machado.  Carlos is an amazing individual.  Not only is Carlos a great fighter, he is truly a living legend.  Carlos took Eddie under his wing, mentored him and shaped him into becoming a good fighter and more importantly, a good human being.

Eddie’s early days of training jiu-jitsu were tough.  He had an ego much larger than he could back up with either strength or technique.  Training partners often man-handled Eddie.  When Eddie was able to leave his ego at the door before stepping onto the mat to train, he was able to learn technique and build a strong jiu-jitsu game.  Eddie competed in many tournaments early in his jiu-jitsu career, amassing both a number of wins and losses.

Through training jiu-jitsu under Carlos Machado, Eddie learned not only the martial art itself, but also self control, humbleness and the notion that life is great when you do something that you love.  After 10 arduous years of training, competing, and being involved with the art on a daily basis, Eddie was awarded a Black Belt

Competing and traveling on a regular basis, Eddie had the opportunity to train with numerous jiu-jitsu celebrities.  In 2008, Eddie started intensely training and preparing for tournaments with Team Nogueira out of Miami, Florida.  This effort helped Eddie in earning and being awarded his 1st degree Black belt by Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira (former UFC and Pride Heavyweight Champion) and Amaury Bitetti (2 Time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Absolute World Champion, UFC veteran, arguably the best BJJ fighter of the 90s).  In 2011, Eddie earned and received his second degree Back Belt from Amaury Bitetti.

Through jiu-jitsu, Eddie has met many fascinating people that he has bonded with through the pure motions of training.  Had it not been for the mentorship of his jiu-jitsu Masters, as well as for the comradery of working with his many training partners, he would not have developed his passion for jiu-jitsu; a passion that has translated into a profession for Eddie.

Today, Eddie Ricardo has refocused his energy and is the head instructor/owner of Cobra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Cobra BJJ) in Plano and Dallas Texas, where he is actively sharing the techniques and skills taught to him by his mentors to students young and old.  He has a growing following of jiu-jitsu practitioners, who appreciate his style of instruction, as well as the increased level of health and confidence achieved by training BJJ.  To his students, Eddie has held himself obligated and responsible to pass along all the teachings and care he received from his Masters.  From a personal level, Eddie is also continuing his pursuit of making himself a better fighter, instructor, and human being.  OSS!!!
